British photographer Ben Robinson visited Zhytomyr with IOM’s team to meet the IDPs and tell the world their story. Here are the results of this project.
The lives of many people were turned upside down last year because of the conflict and displacement in Ukraine, but they hold on, relying on their families, their careers they now should restart from scratch, their experience and their faith in God and in people. They take matters into their own hands and believe that one day everything will fall into place.
The International Organization for Migration was able to support some IDPs staying in Zhytomyr, Northern Ukraine by inviting them to a self-employment and microbusiness training, conducted by the local NGO “Zhytomyr Community Fund” with funding from the United Kingdom. They have also received assistance with drafting business plans, which, should they be approved, will help them to receive grants for sewing equipment, electric welding machines, and barber’s tools – to replace those stolen a few months ago – and many other things which, once in the hands of the IDPs, will give them renewed strength and help them rebuild their lives.
